Saint Valentine’s day, an anniversary, a birthday or simply a romantic day out discovering Umbria.
This region is ideal for anyone looking for a romantic itinerary, offering countless trips that will make your heart skip a beat. Here is an itinerary that brings together the charm of the lake, the marvel of two monuments such as the Pozzo di San Patrizio (Saint Patrick’s Well) in Orvieto and the San Fortunato Bell Tower in Todi and the very special street Vicolo Baciadonne in Città della Pieve and the Teatro più piccolo del mondo, the Smallest Theatre in the World, in Monte Castello di Vibio.
A trip to Trasimeno Lake
Typical hamlets where time seems to have stopped, gorgeous views and breathtaking landscape and the beauty of the lake, with its three islands, are undoubtedly the ideal starting point for a romantic day in Umbria. And right on the lake it is also possible to do numerous activities: why not go for a boat ride? The waters of the Trasimeno are also the setting of the legend of the love story between nymph Agilla and Prince Trasimeno.
Città della Pieve and the street vicolo Baciadonne
The historical centre of Città della Pieve is beautiful and unique, ideal for a romantic walk to discover the rich artwork of this city, also known for its ties with two great painters: this is the birthplace of il Perugino and where il Pomarancio worked for many years. Lovers visiting Città della Pieve must definitely go to the street Vicolo Baciadonne: considered the narrowest in Italy – it is approximately only 50 centimetres wide – it would seem that walking through it has always been used as a way to get a kiss from your beloved.
Orvieto and Saint Patrick’s Well
The Duomo of Orvieto is one of the most important and majestic churches in Italy. From the Torre del Moro you can enjoy an amazing view of the surrounding area as far as the eye can see. The city is built on a cliff giving it its unique and fascinating appearance, as though it were suspended between heaven and earth. And though it seems to be reaching upwards, Orvieto is also able to amaze us with is foundations. In fact visiting the underground city, is breathtaking, with its caves, wells and tunnels carved out in the 5th century B.C. A visit to Saint Patrick’s Well is a must: 53 metres deep and with a double spiral staircase of 248 steps each, lit by 72 large windows that let light in from above. This is where lovers can follow the tradition of tossing in a coin and make a love wish together.
Todi and the San Fortunato Bell Tower
The romantic day in Umbria can end in Todi with a visit to the beautiful historical centre, especially the San Fortunato Bell Tower, possibly at sunset, to enjoy an extraordinary and enchanting view.
Marmore and the Lovers Balcony
If you are spending more than one more day in Umbria – possibly staying overnight in Todi at our welcoming hotel and taking advantage of our offers – another must-see site are the Marmore Waterfalls with the Lovers Balcony. This is a delightful terrace carved into the rock, almost inside the first tier of the waterfall: the atmosphere is so magical not only for the spectacle that its offers, but also for the droplets of water that get in, giving the couple an extra thrill.
